Located on University st in City Heights is the most unassuming little cart selling the best churros I’ve ever had. El Tigre Churros Y Platanos is family-owned and operated. They are only open three days a week, and in addition to churros, they serve platanos, elotes, banana leaf-wrapped tamales and a good ol’ Tijuana-style hot dog.
I was already in love but fell more in love once I learned that they had been operating for over 18 years. The owner and man frying the churros, shared with me stories of how his children used to help him out at the cart. Now his children are all grown up with children of their own. The cart has played a crucial role in funding not only the owner’s life but also his children’s.
In an era of constant new establishments with flashy neon signs and instagrammable food items, it’s places like these that hold a special place in my heart. I’m sure it wasn’t always easy but to me, the churro cart represents how dedication to one’s craft and love for the community can withstand the test of time
If youre in San Diego and still reading this please go pay them a visit. Don’t forget to bring cash. <3
