This post technically features 2 mom&pop shops, Bica and Provecho but I felt like it was appropriate to put them together since I discovered them together and they kinda came up together. Their story shows what dedication to a dream, paired with unwavering community support can create.
Just earlier this year owners, Charlie and Manny from Bica and Gerardo of Provecho were hosting monthly pop-ups in Charlie’s backyard in South Park San Diego, now they have both blossomed into thriving brick-and-mortar shops. I initially found out about the popups through Instagram, and after attending one it became a monthly event that I didn’t want to miss. Good food and good vibes was the motto. You could feel and see the support that surrounded these guys, regulars at the pop ups were all rooting for their success.
From the beginning, both Bica and Provecho were committed to quality. Gerardo takes his craft seriously, he and his team brew the perfect cup of coffee, with beans that are sourced and roasted by them. Bica on the other hand has always been about serving delicious food. From the pop-up days to their current success their philosophy has stayed the same, quality, seasonal, & locally sourced ingredients, they know how to keep it simple yet elevated.
Since opening their permanent locations both these businesses have had nothing short of success. Provecho Coffee had a grand opening event in September and the line wrapped around the building, people waiting almost 2 hours for coffee and to send their congrats to Gerardo. Bica has rapidly made it’s way into the hearts of many as a go-to spot in Normal Heights. It’s crazy inspiring to see people’s dreams and passions evolve into thriving reality right in front of your eyes.
Congratulations to the homies. <3
This is part of an ongoing passion project of mine called mom&pop where I talked to and photograph small businesses that I discover and love. If you liked the story be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss the next one (-:
